A passport holder is more than just an accessory to dress up your passport. Did you know that even a small tear can render your passport invalid and countries can deny you entry because of it? For a traveler, a passport is the most important thing we own and yet, it’s not always treated with the utmost care. That’s why we researched and tried out a variety of holders, coming up with these best passport holders for keeping your passport safe.
Best Water Resistant Passport Holder: Venture 4th Travel Neck Pouch
Even the teeniest, tiniest drop of water can cause water damage that makes your passport invalid. And since judging the amount of damage that is acceptable is subjective and totally dependent on the airline employee or border agent you happen to get, it’s best to protect your passport from any possible damage to begin with.
That’s why we like the Venture 4th Travel Neck Pouch. It’s a durable and water resistant travel pouch that has a an adjustable strap that can be worn around your neck to keep your important documents away from pickpockets. There’s three different storage compartments: two zippered compartments and one velcro closure, and it has an ID window where you can store additional documents like my French residency card or a boarding pass.
The neck pouch also has RFID (radio frequency) blocking, which is important since clever thieves can now steal identities with technology. It’s lightweight at just 2 ounces, so can be worn comfortably when traveling, and comes in several colors.
Best Phone Passport Holder: Lovie Style Phone Charging Passport Holder
One of the biggest challenges when traveling is keeping our phones charged. We use mobile boarding passes for our flights, have our itinerary and all the details of our hotel, tours and more in our TripIt app, answer emails on the go and more. It drains our phone batteries quickly, and having a phone nearly dead upon arrival to a new city is not ideal.
So we really love the Lovie Style Phone Charing Passport Holder. There’s a removable power bank right inside the passport holder to charge up your phone on the go. It’s more a travel wallet than just a passport holder, since there’s slots for credit cards or other identification like a driver’s license or residency card. There’s also room to store some cash. And best of it, the travel wallet zips closed so you don’t lose anything in the airport or on the airplane.
Lovie Style has has RFID blocking, protecting whatever you put inside from opportunistic identity thieves. It’s still pretty lightweight at 8 ounces, including the removable power bank. And it comes in 9 different colors, each with a unique embossed travel saying on the front, so there’s a design for both men and women.
Note that it’s not immediately obvious where the iPhone lightning connected is on the power bank, but after a few minutes of playing around with it you’ll discover the connector. The wallet is also larger than the others on our list, but it is nice that can accommodate a smart phone and that it makes it perfect for travel, especially when flying on a budget airline or when seated in an exit row.
Best Leather Passport Holder for Women: Kate Spade Leather Travel Wallet
The Kate Spade Cameron Street Maria Travel Wallet is a beautiful and stylish passport holder and wallet. It has 15 slots for credit cards, IDs and room keys, plus holds a passport in the right pocket. And the zippered interior compartments are perfect for holding coins and bills so they don’t fall out. There’s also a slit pocket on the back where you can slide in boarding passes.
The wallet has a zip around closure, so you can be sure nothing will fall out while you’re making your way through the airport or when you toss it in your handbag.
Best Family Passport Holder: Gerhard Travel Passport Wallet
Are you the designated passport carrier for the entire family? Even I usually carry passports for both me and Tim when we travel, because it’s just generally easier to access the wallet from my purse rather than him digging through a carry-on.
The Gerhard Travel Passport Wallet is perfect for family travel. It unzips like a book and holds up to four passports, has slots for six credit cards and has internal zipped pockets for coins and cash. It has a strap so you can put it around your wrist and not worry about dropping it while wrangling the family through the airport. And it’s made of a soft, durable material with RFID blocking technology to keep opportunists from stealing your credit card or identity information.
One drawback is the large size, which doesn’t fit inside of small cross body bags if you intend to carry it around with you on the entire trip or use it as a wallet.
Best Passport Wallet for Men: Tumi Alpha Passport Case
Tumi is a trusted name in luggage and travel accessories. We have several Tumi products that we’ve been extremely happy with, including a Tumi laptop case and a Tumi Alpha backpack. They deliver their quality travel products again with the Tumi Alpha Passport Case.
Tumi’s Alpha passport case is a billfold style wallet, just slightly larger than a wallet to accommodate a passport. It has a pocket for the passport on the left, along with a window pocket for holding a driver’s license. On the right, there are 8 credit card slots. Plus, there’s a RFID lined compartment for money or documents. It’s made of heavy duty nylon with a genuine leather trim.
The wallet still fits in a pocket, so can be used as to carry everything. One drawback is that the wallet doesn’t have a compartment for change.

I have never really considered a passport holder before, largely because I like being reminded of how much my passport has experienced by its familiar battered and bruised look. You make some good points about protecting them though and I really like some of these so may have to add to my christmas wish list.
Jennifer Dombrowski says
Battered and bruised can make it invalid, though. All the stamps and the stories that go with them are still great reminders of all that you’ve experienced.

I’m currently travelling around South East Asia and guess what, I don’t have a passport holder 😀 I really really need one though, so I’m thankful for your recommendations. The Venture 4th Travel Neck Pouch sounds like a good one. I love that it is waterproof. The only thing I don’t like that much about it, is that it doesn’t go into my pockets, so I’m probably better of with the Tumi Alpha Passport Case which has some RFID fabric as well. Thank you very much for the inspiration

Glad we could make some suggestions!

Thanks for the great recommendations! I had no clue that having a tear could render your passport invalid! I especially love the case that includes a pocket for the phone!

The Lovie Style passport wallet is great. It’s a little bigger than I would have liked, but I love that it can hold and charge up my phone along with all my important documents.

I have to admit I am guilty of not having a passport holder. My current passport is fairly new but the previous one went through hell and back. I guess I was very lucky. I should really invest in one of those, thanks for the heads up! 🙂

We’ve always kept ours in passport holders. We also have our visas as expats living overseas in them, so it’s really important to keep them in good condition. Getting those visas replaced if something happened to our passports is a huge hassle.

I just happen to be in the market for a new passport holder and you’ve got a great list here. Deciding whether I want the sleek profile of the Kate Spade or the charging function of the Lovie.
Jennifer Dombrowski says
I do love the Lovie Style holder. I’ve been flying budget airlines that don’t have seat back pockets a lot lately and it’s nice to hold on to that with all my important documents, plus my phone safely tucked inside and charging up.

I really like the Lovie Style too. It’s my latest passport holder and it’s like a nice little clutch that keeps my important documents and my phone safe and secure.

We’ve been on the road for the past 14 months and I always just stuff my passport into my bag without really thinking about the potential of bending or tearing the pages. I had no idea that airline employees and border agents could be so strict and deny entry – yikes! You’ve put together a very comprehensive list of diverse options, sure to suit any traveler. Definitely adding this post to my list of Christmas wishes!

Wait… There’s a charging passport holder? That’s amazing, makes the perfect gift! I’m also a fan of everything Tumi makes. I may have to consider their men’s passport holder as a gift for my husband.
Paige says
These are some absolutely beautiful passport covers. I have a cute one for mine, mostly to keep it from getting bent and torn, but I’ve never thought about the fact it should probably be waterproof as well.
Christopher says
Wow you bing up a good point. Obviously we know our passport is the most important piece of identification we have. The only piece that matters. its gets us across borders but most importantly it gets us back home. I do keep mine inside a special Swiss Army pouch but I like the idea of having a water resistant pouch as water will destroy paper..
