Have you ever wanted to book a red-eye flight to make the most of every minute of your trip? Or has the price of a flight with a long layover been almost too good to pass up? But the one thing holding you back is the thought of having nowhere to go for a bit of rest, especially when traveling with a pet. Then you need to know about Dayuse, a hotel booking site where you can easily search for hotel rooms by day use, at prices far less than paying the full rate for an overnight stay.
Hotels are not just strictly for overnight stays and many are breaking the norm of traditional check-in and checkout times, offering stays of just a few hours. And sometimes a few hours is all you need, just like when I was traveling from New York City to Paris, France with Coco on an overnight flight.
While when flying with a dog, you do want to tire your dog out with extra walks and play time, you also don’t want your dog to be overly tired. The number one benefit of booking hotel rooms by day is having a quiet and comfortable place to rest, so that both you and your pet can recharge and rejuvenate before continuing your trip.
On our recent trip, we spent several days exploring NYC ahead of our overnight flight with K9 Jets from Teterboro to Paris. At first I was worried about how I would give Coco a quiet place to nap and eat since we would have to check out of our hotel at 11am and our flight wasn’t until 9pm. But I discovered Dayuse. The site easily filters for pet-friendly stays and the time you want to check-in.
After spending a very snowy day exploring Central Park, we were both thankful I had booked a day use hotel room. And since not all pet-friendly hotels are created equal, here are five NYC hotels by day perfect for a long layover or ahead of a red-eye flight that welcome larger dogs.
The James New York – NoMad
When it comes to Manhattan, we love staying in the trendy NoMad neighborhood (the acronym for North of Madison Square Park). The boutique The James New York – NoMad is located at 29th Street and Madison Avenue, which is a pleasantly quiet location for being in the heart of Manhattan. Madison Square Park is just a five minute walk away, where you’ll also find Jemmy’s Dog Run with dedicated big and small dog play areas within the park and the dog-friendly original Shake Shack location if you want to grab something to eat.
The boutique hotel is located in an attractive and historic NoMad Beaux Arts monument. The rooms are jaw-droppingly spacious for a Manhattan hotel, pets are treated like family with a plush bed and bowls for use during their stay and all breeds and sizes are welcomed with all-natural baked dog treats, and there are amenities even day use guests are welcome to take advantage of like the wine hour from 5pm – 7pm nightly where wine, nibbles and live music are offered complimentary for hotel guests.
New York Hilton Midtown
The New York Hilton Midtown, located at the corner of 6th Avenue and 54th Street, can’t be beat as a day use hotel with a prime location. It’s just a few short blocks walk to Central Park, which is an absolute urban oasis for both you and your dog. Honestly, it’s tough finding even a patch of grass accessible to dogs in New York City, and having Central Park practically on your hotel doorstep is a dream.
I’ve previously stayed at the New York Hilton Midtown and rooms are again spacious when it comes to Manhattan hotel rooms, and well appointed with modern amenities. And if you request an accessible room, the shower comes with a detachable spray handle which can make giving your dog a rinse much easier. There’s also a grab and go in the lobby, making grabbing a snack easy.
Dayuse allows you to book the New York Hilton Midtown for a variety of 6 hour stays from 6am – 12pm, 1pm – 7pm or 3pm – 9pm that accommodate any traveler’s layover. The New York Hilton Midtown allows up to 2 dogs 75 pounds each per room.
Hotel 48LEX
Named for its location, Hotel 48LEX is set on the corner of 48th Street and Lexington Avenue on the East Side. The hotel is in a quiet location, yet a short walk away from many Manhattan attractions and about a 20-minute walk to Central Park. Grand Central Station is just a 7-minute walk away, which is perfect if you plan to continue your trip on the dog-friendly Metro-North Railroad.
The rooms are comfortable with modern amenities. And bathroom showers actually come with spray handles, which can be super useful if you need to wash your dog’s paws. There’s also in-room dining available if you want to order a bite from room service.
Dayuse allows you to book Hotel 48LEX for a variety of day use lengths such as 9am – 5pm or 9am – 2pm and 12pm – 6pm or 2pm – 9pm. Hotel 48LEX allows dogs up to 50 pounds or 2 dogs with a combined total weight of no more than 75 pounds.
Walker Hotel Tribeca
Walking the Brooklyn Bridge is definitely a NYC highlight, and the Walker Hotel Tribeca is perfectly positioned for access to the Brooklyn Bridge. You also have access to a variety of Downtown attractions to check out nearby like the Ghostbusters Headquarters, which give out dog treats to their four-legged visitors when the working fire station door is open.
The Walker Hotel Tribeca might be a tight squeeze for a longer stay when you want to open up your luggage and have easy access to your stuff, but the furniture and layout maximizes space in their Walker Full (the only room option available for day use).
Dayuse allows you to book Walker Hotel Tribeca for a variety of 8 hour stays from 8am – 4pm, 10am – 6pm or 3pm – 11pm. The 11pm day use checkout time is one of the latest we found, making it a particularly great option for a late night flight or evening layover. Walker Hotel Tribeca allows dogs up to 50 pounds.
Hilton Garden Inn New York Central Park South
The Hilton Garden Inn New York Central Park South is located on 54th Street at Broadway, just a short walk to Central Park West and Columbus Circle. The major things this Hilton Garden Inn has going for it are location and that up to 2 pets weighing up to 75 pounds each are welcome.
The rooms at Hilton Garden Inn New York Central Park South are small, but adequate for a day use hotel where you just want to relax and freshen up with a shower. There is also an onsite restaurant offering room service.
Dayuse allows you to book the Hilton Garden Inn New York Central Park South for a variety of day use duration and times from as little as a 3-hour stay up to 8 hour stays.
