For those who like their holidays with plenty of adventure, we’ve chosen 7 of the must-visit destinations for adrenaline junkies. From all-inclusive holidays to cycling and hiking trips, check out our selection.
The Pyrenees, France
This colossal mountain range stretches for hundreds of miles across France, Spain and Andorra. It’s best enjoyed on two wheels, with a cycling holiday beginning at the Atlantic Ocean and finishing at the Mediterranean Sea. Along the way, you’ll take in some of the iconic Tour de France hotspots including the Col de Portet Aspet and Col du Tourmalet. On the route, there’s no shortage of charming villages for some much needed relaxation. Replenish your energy by sampling local delicacies!
Head to this jaw-dropping mountain range nestled in the Italian Alps and you’ll find one of the best climbing routes in the world. Known as Via Ferrata, this challenging hike is not for the fainthearted. Traveling deep into the Brenta group of mountains, you’ll navigate high-level trails with the help of fixed ladders. An experienced guide is recommended for this.
Tarifa, Spain
If it’s wind you’re looking for, the beach town of Tarifa is regarded as one of the breeziest in Europe. This is great news for kite and wind surfing fanatics, since it boasts a vast stretch of golden sands. Located on the Strait of Gibraltar, there’s also plenty of climbing to be enjoyed further inland. Expect magnificent views over the Strait – if you’re lucky you’ll spot Morocco on a clear day.
The Berchtesgaden Alps, Germany
Situated on the German/Austrian border, this hiking mecca draws plenty of visitors to its picture postcard views. Choose from a selection of trails, with something to suit most abilities. Many take you on an almost circular route of Konigssee – a glacial lake hemmed in by the mountains. Adrenaline junkies can also admire the view from above, with hang gliding available from the higher regions.
Madeira, Portugal
This laid back island isn’t just for the sun worshiping traveler (although of course they are catered for by plenty of companies as well). With stunning natural landscapes, it’s quickly become an adventurer’s paradise. Aside from world-class surfing, visitors can climb one of the many peaks. Pico do Arieiro is the third highest, with a gentle route traversing eucalyptus forests and taking you high into the clouds.
Thingvellir National Park, Iceland
Home to one of the country’s most spectacular natural wonders, this National Park offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Visitors can scuba dive the crystal glacial waters between two tectonic plates. Renowned as being one of the best dives sites in the world, it’s just one of the many excursions you can enjoy in Iceland. Visit towering waterfalls, rejuvenate the body in thermal-heated baths or marvel at the Northern Lights.
An exclusive destination amongst the thrill-seeking fraternity, Mont Blanc provides an endless selection of heart-stopping pursuits. If you’re feeling brave, take on one of the highest peaks in the world with a challenging climb to the summit. Alternatively, grab the camera and enjoy the views from 4,000m on a paragliding tour.
Visit one of these thrilling destinations and you’re guaranteed adventure and an unforgettable holiday.
