Santorini is a magical and mysterious place. Even Plato thought so and based his story about the lost city of Atlantis on the island’s own lost city of ancient Akrotiri. We had so many magical discoveries of our own on the island – the incredible food, the wine, stunning sea cliffs only accessible by tiny boats and sea kayaks – and the Astra Suites, which literally knocked our socks off with its wow-factor. Clinging to the cliffside in Imerovigli, the heart-stopping views are just one of the reasons we absolutely loved our stay at this fabulous boutique hotel. But just in case we didn’t tempt you already, here are 10 reasons to stay at Astra Suites:
1. Free bottle of wine. Every night.
If you’ve been reading along, you know we like our wine. The Atlantis White 2012 chilling in the minibar is produced from one of the island’s oldest wineries with some of the oldest vines. With stunning views of the caldera (which we’ll get to in a minute) and a cold bottle of wine to drink on your private balcony, there’s no need to go anywhere else to find the perfect spot to watch the famous golden sunset.
2. The views.
We’ve already mentioned the jaw-dropping views, oh three times now? Well, the views were just that good. Perched on the cliffs in a quite little corner between the bustling Fira Town and Oia, our balcony seemingly dangled over the sea. It was the perfect spot to privately enjoy Santorini’s famous golden sunset as it dips behind the three facing volcanic isles of Thirasia, Palea Kammeni and Nea Kammeni.
3. Breakfast with a view.
Without fail, Tim wakes up promptly by 7:30 hungry and wanting breakfast. Usually that means I have to get dressed and at least be presentable while dining with other guests in the breakfast room. Not at Astra Suites. The a la carte breakfast is ordered the night before and arrives at your designated time on your private balcony. I immensely enjoyed sitting on my balcony in a plush terry robe while enjoying my Greek yogurt, omelet, and freshly squeezed orange juice. Oh, and did I mention the view?
4. Honeymoon Jacuzzi Suite.
This spacious sweet is the ultimate romantic hideaway. As night descends on Santorini and the cool breeze blows, the private jacuzzi is the perfect place to share a bottle of wine, conveniently left for you each day by the hotel! The bathroom is spacious with a huge shower and dressing area. The king sized bed is in its own alcove and there is a separate dining and sitting area, which a couch so comfy Tim proclaimed he could sleep right there. The decor is simple, yet elegant and really makes the space a place you want to spent time in. Every suite comes with a fully-equipped kitchenette, so it’s more like your own apartment that you never have to leave!
5. Room service.
Room service often feels like one of those special treats you only indulge in on occasion. Usually because the service charge for room service is nearly as much as the meal itself. Not at Astra Suites. There’s no additional fee for room service and light meals are available until midnight. Wanting to uncork our Atlantis White and relax in the jacuzzi, we couldn’t be lured from our sweet suite, so souvlaki and Caesar salads from the room service menu satisfied our hunger pains.
6. Infinity pool.
With just 27 rooms, the infinity pool was never crowded. Rather it was a relaxing place to cool off with a dip. Grab a glass of crisp white wine from the pool bar, borrow a book, and you’ve got a recipe for a relaxing afternoon!
7. Books exchange.
As a light packer, books and even my Barnes and Noble Nook don’t often make it into my travel bag. So I loved the books exchange bookcase I spotted in the reception of Astra Suites. I even spotted some of the newest titles like Sophie Kinsella’s Wedding Night kindly left by recent guests.
8. Service.
From the excellent turn-by-turn directions emailed to us prior to our arrival to the friendly hellos from the staff, the service is delivered in spades. George, the Director at Astra Suites knows Santorini like the back of his hand and we were so pleased that we took several of his recommendations for the best restaurants and sights on the island. And God bless the porters that lugged our bags, now full of bottles of wines, back up to the top and loaded them into our car on our day of departure!
9. Amenities.
Bulgari bath products, free wifi, pool and beach towels free of charge to guests, the daily bottle of wine and liter of water…the list of amenities to make guests’ stays as comfortable as possible just goes on. We don’t have kids, but it’s good to know that there are English-speaking babysitters available to give parents some much needed alone time. There’s even a hospitality suite for guests that arrive early or need to check out late to enjoy!

Right? How can you go wrong with selecting a hotel that gives you a complimentary bottle of wine to enjoy each night?!

It was! My only complaint was that we had to leave.

Seriously? Free wine? How cool is that? 😉 and how stunning is the view…awesome accomodation! You have to remember me of it when I go to Santorini one day :))
Jennifer Dombrowski says
Totally awesome! And it is a full sized bottle of good wine sold at a local winery we ended up visiting during our stay in Santorini. We’ve had other hotels give us a welcome bottle of wine or champagne before, but a bottle replaced each day of your stay is such an awesome way to take care of guests!
