Wine tasting with a view is an understatement at Bitter Creek Winery in Jerome, Arizona. As I peered into the glass door of the winery located a top the Cleopatra Hill, the view alone was enough to draw me in. The fact that I found delicious and unique wine there was an added bonus!
A wine tasting at Bitter Creek Winery is $10 for any four wines of your choice. I chose to try all reds for my four tastings. All of the wines are blends, some of the grapes unique to the South West that I was mostly unfamiliar with until my latest visit to Arizona, so I let the unique labels draw me in.
Jerome was almost equally as famous as a hotbed for prostitution and brothels as it was for being the Billion Dollar Copper Camp, so it wasn’t too surprising to find such as provocative label as on All Wrapped Up by Sultry (ironic?) Cellars. A blend of 25% Primitvo, 25% Malbec, 25% Merlot, and 25% Tempranillo, I liked the intoxicating aroma of cherries. It had a taste of cherries and hints of apricots.
Moving on to three more wines by Bitter Creek Winery, the labels are all based on a deck of Tarot cards and were designed by Valley Verde tattoo artist Rick Wyckoff. Each label is a work of art! My absolute favorite wine was the Crusader, a blend of 60% Syrah, 20% Zinfandel, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The best way to describe Crusader is that is tastes like fruit jam, but isn’t overly sweet. I would love to pair this wine with barbecue!
I could have just ended my tasting with two more pours of Crusader, but decided to give a few other a chance. Judgement is an equal blend of Syrah, Pt. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. It was velvety with nice tannins and a hint of spice. IV Horsemen is also an equal blend of Cabernet, Zinfandel, Syrah, and Pt. Syrah with a spicy, peppery taste.
Ultimately, Crusader stole my heart with its’ burst of blackberries and cherries and rich finish. I highly recommend you stop in this winery and enjoy the view the the Little Daisy Copper Mine while sipping on a glass of Crusader!
